Yam seed system characteristics in Nigeria: Local practices, preferences, and the implications for seed system interventions

Yam is an important food and cash crop in Nigeria. The seed system mostly farmer-based its challenges opportunities are not well documented. This study reports results of surveys, interviews, focus group discussions participant observations that describe local practices characterizing yam cultivation the five states Our findings show ware dynamic highly commercialized goods There a high demand for, turn-over of, yam. reasons for low multiplication rate degeneration which lead farmers to frequently acquire fresh seeds replace varieties, investing significantly found some specializing production but less than expected such commercial crop. market major source off-farm sourced yam, although completely informal, sector vibrant organized. identification strategically positioned traders can offer entry points introduction new varieties improved techniques.
